A Little About Us

Overview

In 1980, Professor Dietrich Schwanitz, of the English Department (now Anglistik and Amerikanistik Departments) at the University of Hamburg, created the University Players. Their versatile theatre projects conducted in the English language blend comedy and drama, entertaining, not only fans of English and American culture but also an ever growing constituency of the theatre going community, all the while making a consistent effort to attend to the English and American classics, as well as the works of intriguing modern playwrights.

Our Theater Opens its Doors

As can be expected, we are very interested in willing participants with theater experience, but it is certainly not a prerequisite. Under the guidance of workshop participants, new participants have the opportunity to gather practical experience in all branches (production, publicity, programme development, direction, acting, lighting, sound, costuming, stage design, masks, etc.), which could, later, make the transition into professional theater a tangible proposition. Many have used the University Players as a stepping stone into careers in theater and media. In any case, participation with the UPs looks great on any c.v. !

A One of a Kind Workshop

The workshop atmosphere of the University Players has won the group national recognition as a remarkably unique enterprise. Parallel to the existing and very demanding curriculum, students at the University of Hamburg are offered a meaningful and attractive educational alternative.  Recently the workshop has been supported through courses offered by the English department which provide a creative link between practical work with texts and literary studies.
